‘Versailles’ — The Historical Drama Too Hot For The Brits — Is Now On Netflix

‘Versailles’ — The Historical Drama Too Hot For The Brits — Is Now On Netflix

Heads up! The hottest show on British television, Versailles, is finally available to stream on Netflix.
Way back in March, we let you know all about the ruckus this very racy costume drama was causing in Great Britain. While many viewers fell hard for Versailles‘ lush look at the life of Louis XIV,

conservatives condemned the program and some people likened it to pornography. What specifically was so shocking? Well, the first episode alone had scenes of nudity, straight sex, gay sex, cross-dressing, oral sex, a lusty queen with a thing for little people, oh, and torture.

The series was also controversial for another, more pedestrian reason. The international production (which was headed up by French and Canadian companies) decided to film the very French court of Versailles in English to appeal to a wider international audience. That’s good for Yanks like us who like to watch our shows without reading subtitles, but it irked the French.

Versailles stars George Blagden (Vikings, Les Miserables) as the famous Sun King, Louis XIV. The first season follows the young king’s unique power move over the French nobility: He moves the court from the capital of Paris to his own hunting lodge at Versailles. There, both the king and the nobles encounter intrigue, danger, and, yes, lots of sex.

Before making the leap to Netflix, season one debuted stateside on Ovation. Season two will debut next year on the BBC and a third season has been ordered. No word on how long Netflix subscribers will have to wait for those new episodes.
