Love, hate, and extremes in fiction

Love, hate, and extremes in fiction

1. HateFirst thing I know for sure is, its innate within human nature to kill and hate. I’ve watched the news and I’ve read different pieces of literature referencing the criminal mind. I’ve done this all in the name of research for my writing and I have to admit also out of curiosity. But more than my observations and my education, I know myself. Not that I have killed, but I have felt the strong passions of rage, where words no longer expressed my vile hatred for a situation. Where my gut has told me that even if I were to find the words, they would not justify my frustration.

2. LoveSecond thing I know for sure is, it’s innate in our DNA to love. It’s woven into our souls and in our chemistry to love. Love is within us all, that’s why there’s the expression “love at first sight.” If you don’t believe me, ask any new mother how fast she fell in love with her newborn child. And for those who had the rare opportunity to fall in love with a lover at first sight. They will swear by its power as well.

3. ExtremesLastly, but not at all the least by any measure, I know for sure, too much of any extreme is not healthy. The old saying “everything in moderation” holds true. You can’t have day without night. You can’t have Good without Bad. Somehow they exist to compliment each other. They don’t have to be equal, but they must balance each other respectably. These three things I know for sure play constantly together intertwining their ways into my daily thoughts and behavior. But where they play most often is in my writing, questioning the What Ifs and Why’s found in life.I’m frequently asked, “Why paranormal romance genre? Do you believe in demons, witches and vampires?” My answer is these creatures existed before I was even a tiny notion to my parents. I did not create them, but men who lived long before me created these myths.

My question is why? What did they see to motivate them to take time to build or write a story dedicated to these creatures? And I know the answer – they saw blood. They saw death; they saw birth; they saw beauty that could not be defined as physical; and they saw things in their environment that lacked veracity. The things those men witnessed were too cruel or too unusual to fit into reality. What I believe they saw was the dance between hatred and love with no limits, no bounds and no control. To witness an extreme in its purest form, I’m sure it could not be expressed as truth, so they called it fiction. Today I call it Paranormal Romance.
