‘Game of Thrones’ Won’t Be Back Until Next Summer, Taking It Out of Emmy Consideration Next Year
Game of Thrones producers have been saying for a few weeks now that production on the seventh season will be pushed back a bit in order to wait for weather that’s advantageous to the increasing wintriness that will be falling over Westeros.
But with that delayed production schedule comes a delayed release, and today HBO is confirming that indeed Game of Thrones won’t be back next spring. Instead, the 7-episode seventh season will air next summer.
That’s only a delay of a few months, but it means that Game of Thrones will have been off the air for over a year and, most significantly, they will miss out on the eligibility window for next year’s Emmy Awards.
That eligibility window runs from the beginning of June 2016 to the end of May 2017. GoT won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy this year, and with a leading 23 nominations, they’re the odds-on favorites to win again this year. Next year, though, it’s looking like a WIDE open race. Could this be the chance that something like a Mr. Robot (which is currently airing episodes that will be Emmy-eligible next year) or House of Cards or something we haven’t seen yet like the upcoming Netflix series The Crown? This is also good news if you’re a supporting actress in a drama, since 3/6 of this year’s nominees will be off the table next year.
This wouldn’t be the first time that an Emmy powerhouse was ineligible during its run. Breaking Bad changed its release schedule for its fourth season and thus sat out the 2011 Emmys (giving Kyle Chandler a chance to win the Lead Actor in a Drama Emmy for Friday Night Lights), and The Sopranos missed out on the 2002 and 2005 Emmys as their later seasons bounced across the schedule. That 2005 Emmys was the year Lost won for its first season, so don’t be surprised if a brand new series jumps up to take the crown this coming year.
