I’ve heard so many good things about West’s Pivot Point series that’s why when requested On The Fence and got approved for it, I was really so excited and giddy at the same time.
I have to be honest though – I didn’t love Charlie right away because she had this certain attitude at the beginning of the story, but once I got to know her more, I grew to like her little by little. I love that the two main characters have this very strong foundation of friendship and that they know each other pretty damn well. Their talks on the fence were just simple, but at the same time, they’re also the sweetest. Sometimes, knowing the little things mean so much more than knowing the bigger ones.
Even though Charlie was this tomboy, also mainly because she’s the only female member of their family, you can still see this other side of her, the one who grew to like dressing up and getting dolled up. But, there’s also this fun side of her, the one who is adventurous and who likes to play sports, and I really liked that about her because she’s not the overly emotional and immature type of MC.
And then there’s Braden… oh how to even start with Braden. He is this very amazing guy who always looks out for Charlie and only wants what’s best for her. Their ‘I-Know-You-Better’ fence games were very entertaining to read and the slow building romance kept me up all night because at one point, I really wanted them to get together already, but the wait is definitely worth it, I PROMISE.
Hands down to Kasie West’s writing style – from the build-up of the relationship of Charlie and Braden to the moments of vulnerability of the two main characters – it is downright brilliant. I think she should teach Swoon 101 because she is just so darn good at it!
The supporting characters were also very likeable as well. Charlie’s brothers, especially Gage, made me want to have more brothers because they’re just fun and awesome and sweet at the same time. The relationship of Charlie and her dad was portrayed very beautifully, because even though it’s flawed, West did an insanely good job of getting them closer together and fixing what was broken all those years ago.
On The Fence has the perfect mix of drama, romance, tension and humour. It’ll teach readers about the importance of family and friendship and also the value of trust in a relationship. West’s writing style will definitely draw you in and you will be sucked immediately into it. It’ll give some positive vibes that we definitely need in our everyday lives.
